Mind Matters

Free Your Thoughts

Years ago, motivational teacher Zig Zigler opened his seminars with the statement, “Give yourself a checkup from the neck up and stop your stinkin’ thinkin’.” He was referring to how negative thoughts limit our possibilities and achievements. To accomplish anything, the first step is creating the thought. Successful people allow thoughts that lead to hope and a plan, sparking the creativity and positivity that is your birthright.

Negative thinking (including fear, doubt and hopelessness) stops you. Here’s an exercise to create a positive mind-set. Watch your thoughts, be an astute observer. When a negative thought appears, such as, “That person meant to cut me off in traffic,” STOP, take four long deep breaths and ask yourself, “Is this really true?” Breathe deeply again and examine the thought thoroughly. If your investigation reveals that the thought is actually an opinion or supposition, switch it to the positive possibility and you’ve stopped the stinkin’ thinkin’! Free your mind and see what happens!

Yogi Bhajan taught an amazingly simple way to "cut" negative thoughts. Simply focus your eyes on the tip of your nose for a few seconds. It is amazing!
