Sacred Mala Meditation

Most scholars agree that the earliest use of prayer beads (“mala”) originates in India in the 8th century B.C. The word mala in Sanskrit translates roughly as “precious garland.” Today, malas are a universal spiritual technology with variations in most of the world’s major religions. The mala is used to enhance meditation, relieve stress and provide a concrete tool for counting one’s prayers in repetition.

Your own mala is personal and sacred. Choosing which stones to use can be an amazing journey as you discover that each stone holds its own individual healing properties. Wearing your mala as a bracelet or a necklace can also be a wonderful accessory to meditation, as it absorbs the vibrations of your meditation practice so you can carry and project those sacred vibrations into your daily activities.

One very powerful stone to use in your mala is jade. Jade is known for longevity, health and prosperity. It is peaceful and nurturing. Try the mantra Har Haray Hari (pronounced Hud Hu-day Hu-dee found on Santokh Singh Khalsa’s CD - Mantras of The Master) as it is a mantra for health and prosperity.

Sit crossed-legged with the hands resting on the knees, spine straight. Hold the mala in either the left or right hand and begin your mantra on the first bead located next to the Guru bead. Use the thumb and the first three fingers to rotate the mala. Pause for prayer as you reach the Guru bead and then turn your mala so that the last bead becomes the first bead, and continue. Chant one word on each bead. As you go around the mala, know that you are working with meridian points and sacred vibrations which will stay with you throughout the day.
