Gut Instincts

Intuition Matters - Part I

We've all had them—sensations in our solar plexus or stomach that demand attention. They're called gut feelings. These sensations may be as subtle as a slight pinching, a mild ache or a sense of uneasiness. Other times they might feel like a stomach-clinching anxiety attack.

Gut feelings are usually accompanied by a knowingness or flash of insight. An example of this took place for me one night as I drove home past the freeway exit to the apartment of a soul mate of four years. He had died of a heart attack six months earlier and the circumstances surrounding his passing were particularly traumatic for me, as he had called me for help and I was unable to get to him in time. His former apartment represented a deeply tragic event that held nothing but pain, loss and futility for me.

I was planning to drive past the exit and spare myself the heartache. As I approached the off-ramp however, I immediately experienced a deep-pulling, anxiety-stricken sensation in my gut. I surrendered to the instinct and pulled off at the exit, bracing myself for a flood of emotion as I drove into the parking lot. In the window of the apartment, I saw a beautifully-decorated Christmas tree. The feelings emanating from that space were pure love and celebration.

Instead of sadness, I felt my partner was talking to me from the other side. The message was clear. He wanted me to see the space filled with love. Life goes on, and it was time for me to let go and get on with my life. As I was bathed in the soft glow of the holiday lights, I experienced the knowingness that, by listening to my “gut instinct,” I had been given a gift of healing.

Also would like to suggest a book now available on amazon called: "What's Behind Your Belly Button?" and it is a psychological perspective of the intelligence of human nature and gut instinct. Great read to help you understand your gut feelings and get
in touch with them:
