Divining the Truth

The History of Tarot

For millennia, human beings have sought to know the Will of the Divine. The Tarot is a unique method of divination, using imagery to tap into your Unconscious while revealing information about your psyche normally hidden by the overactive ego.

The original Tarot comes to us from ancient Egypt, where it was used by the High Priests to “divine” etheric information for the Pharaohs. The Tarot, like astrology, was a proven oracle used to seek guidance from the Universal Presence.

Gypsy caravans facilitated the spread of the Tarot around the world. Tarot finally landed in the British Isles, where the “standard” Tarot cards we use today originated. The Tarot deck is full of symbolism, and draws its esoteric influences from Egyptian, British, Celtic, German and Hebrew cultures.

When I began reading the Tarot, I was drawn to it over other divination tools because I am a visual artist and painter. The images drew me in and opened my mind to a greater intuitive awareness, a process that deepens the more I work with the cards.

To this day, I enjoy reading the Tarot, whether pulling a single card for a direct answer or doing a full reading for a friend or client. I enjoy the Celtic Cross spread, which is the primary layout described in most books on Tarot. Most importantly, when choosing your own Tarot deck, take the time to let its imagery speak to you…trust your intuition and the right one will call to you.

Once you begin using the Tarot, you’ll have an opportunity to delve deeply into your inner self and connect to an Infinite Source of wisdom and knowledge. Be creative in your use of the Tarot— and know that how you ask the question is the most important and revealing part of the process!

Most people consider tarot to have evolved in Italy. I'm surprised you don't mention that.

Thank you everyone. The Tarot originated in Egypt and used by the High Priests and High Priestesses before Italy, or actually, Rome was an empire. I am sure it traveled along the Mediterranean and up through the Roman Empire.
