Elementary My Dear

Tattwas and Mental Projection

Thinking about thinking is a perilous prospect. The line between philosopher and madman was long considered hazy at best, and today science has shown that the brain activity of artists and great thinkers is remarkably similar to that of schizophrenics. Yogis have a method of clarifying the topic and making your own thinking more accessible and easier to manage. The key is the Tattwas, or elements.

Thoughts have literal weight, biochemically and linguistically (in terms of meaning). In both senses, thoughts embody the elements of Earth, Water, Fire, Air, and Ether. Simply close your eyes and observe a thought at random. Ask yourself which element is predominant. It should be obvious (if it’s not, the answer is likely air or ether). Then bring balance by adding the contrasting element, for example, earth, if your thinking is fiery, airy or etheric. Make a habit of examining your thoughts this way. You’ll find maintaining balance keeps you cool, calm and in your own element, so your projection is strong, solid and clear.
