In the Fasting Lane

Spring Cleaning

Rains come, flowers bloom, birds fly north and the bees get back to their busy, buzzing business. As the seasons change and the sun goes on the ascent, you begin to change your own habits, acclimating to the new weather and the new possibilities. This year, as you hang that winter coat back up and pull out your shorts and tank tops, consider the changes going on in your inner climate as well.

Winter is the time for hibernation, a time when the body slows its processes and stores extra energy as the temperatures drop. When the temps begin to rise again, the body has to get rid of the extra stores to become more efficient for the hot summer months. The best way to help this process along is to cleanse or fast. There are numerous healthy ways of cleansing, but what is certain is that once completed, you’ll be in rhythm with your body and will be better suited to make the most of your food, energy, and your whole summer!

Can you suggest any particular fast and your experience?
Thank you in advance.

Fasting is a very individual experience. We recommend you study up on the various different forms of fasting and cleansing, as they run quite a range. The first time around it's always, always a good idea to work with a health practitioner, so that you are guided and supported along the way. There is definitely a right and a not-so-right way to do it. We recommend a couple of good books on fasting in The Mint Shop and there are more online. There are also group cleansing programs that are facilitated by knowledgeable folks. Check it all out and then start with something doable for you. Good luck!

How different should detoxing be at the Autumn Equinox, which is where we are in the Southern Hemisphere?

Basically, doing a cleanse in the spring or the fall (and no matter which hemisphere :) is the same process. The blood chemistry is changing. The only difference is the direction this change is going.
So, in the Spring, where things are opening into bloom, it makes sense to supplement your cleanse with foods that are opening up to the sun, i.e. things that grow above ground.
In the fall, the blood is preparing to hunker down, so it makes sense to prepare plenty of root vegetables-- things grown below ground-- and lots of warm stuff, like soups... and Yogi Tea!
All in all, the important thing is to listen to the body. So the power of meditation and yoga during these processes (Fall or Winter) cannot be underestimated.

Thanks for the great post. I am definitely feeling the need to lighten up and cleanse my system. I am making a green veggie "detox" soup at this minute to jump-start this process!
